Atherton in California’s San Mateo County is one of the most affluent communities in the entire United States.
Located within commuting distance of Palo Alto and San Francisco, Atherton has a population of 7,185 people, and serves as a home to some of the tech industry’s biggest players such as Google, Twitter, and Uber.
The epicenter of Silicon Valley money, Atherton is predominantly a white-collar workforce, with a median household income of $500,000, which, according to Bloomberg, is one of the highest in the entire United States.
Given the neighborhood’s high income rates, Atherton’s real estate market is among the most competitive in the country, with prices for homes in the area hovering at $2 million. Equally impressive too, is Atherton’s 93.6% homeownership rate, the current national average rate is 63.9%.
A much more private neighborhood compared to the nearby areas of Menlo Park and the city of San Francisco, Atherton is the preferred area of those who value utmost privacy and security. Notable residents in the area include former HP CEO Meg Whitman, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, NBA star player Stephen Curry, longtime Fleetwood Mac vocalist Lindsey Buckingham, and Google chairman Eric Schmidt.
Atherton is very much a community-oriented neighborhood, with the town home to several active local organizations, such as the Atherton Heritage Association, the Atherton Arts Committee, the Friends of the Atherton Community Library, and the Atherton Civic Interest League.
The neighborhood is also the location of the private Menlo Circus Club, which not only has facilities for tennis and swimming, but also a beautiful equestrian center, where members can ride and train their prized horses.
